Improve Quarterbacking Skills with Specific Drills
May 28, 2009 by admin
Filed under How To Coach A Quarterback
In all levels of the sport, the quarterback is the most important player on the team. His ability to lead the team, play under pressure and perform capably in all situations will decide the fate of a team, raising mediocre squads to great ones or in some situations, bringing down very good teams to average ones. Teaching your quarterbacks the fundamentals will help your entire team improve.
Basic quarterback drills are always important, but there especially important at a young age. This is when habits are formed and basic skills are remembered for the long haul as hardened techniques.
Before your quarterback can effectively throw the ball he has to be able to hold onto the ball. Therefore one of the most basic drills you can start with involves your quarterback holding the ball with one hand and moving it around, over and through his body. Have him change body postures and do it on the move. It will help your quarterback gain a sense of what is and isn’t possible and how he has to react in game situations.
You can make this more challenging by having another player or a coach walking around the player or running at the player and trying to swipe the ball out of his hands. The purpose of this drill is to instill ball control and comfort with handling the ball.
Moving up to the next drill you will have to teach your quarterback the proper way to hand the ball off. Line up as the running back behind your quarterback and have him simulate taking a snap, turning around and handing the ball to you. Be sure to show him how to hold the ball during the hand off process and where it needs to be placed, in your stomach where your hands and arms are ready to grasp it.
From the basic handoff you can then practice the harder tosses and pitches that accompany a complete offensive attack. You can practice reverses, sweeps, laterals and all behind the line of scrimmage handoffs and passes. Some players have difficulty being accurate with these short throws, so be sure to give them the opportunity to get in a solid number of repetitions so they can consistently develop their muscle memory and learn the skill.
Throwing the ball accurately is more important than throwing the ball with force, and this drill will help instill accuracy while also building strength. Have two of your quarterbacks each be on one knee about ten yards apart from one another. Without ever standing up or moving from side to side, one quarterback picks up a football from the turf and with proper techniques throws it to the other player. They alternate in this fashion without ever getting up which forces accuracy and teaches sound technique.
The goal is that neither player should have to get up and move to catch any of the passes or make any of the throws. You’ll be emphasizing accuracy and teaching solid techniques, while building core strength and range of motion. Each player should complete two or three dozen passes, then switch knees and do it again. After a few practice sessions, have the players be down on both knees when performing this drill.
Football Offensive Line Drills-Guidelines For Implementing Them Yourself
May 7, 2009 by admin
Offensive Linemen are some of the most important players in football. It is up to them to make sure that all of the offensive plays run smoothly. If not than the offensive team doesn’t score and the game can’t be won. It is for this reason that they have to be on top of their game and making plays correctly.
It isn’t just important that they are making plays it is also important that they are in shape. They need to be in shape in order to continue to play effectively and last for as long as the quarters go. If they cannot last the duration of the quarter than the team suffers as a whole.
The first drill ends up placing one offensive lineman at the bottom of a hill. Placed on the hill are 2 defensive linemen. The offensive linemen in this case linemen 1 needs to push one of them up the hill as quickly as he can. Once the whistle is then blown the 1st linemen then needs to switch to the 2nd defender and try to push him up the hill as well. This is an extremely ravaging exercise that helps the linemen build strength, stamina, and endurance.
There is a second very common exercise that the linemen practice that most of us have seen on TV at one point or another. It is a drill using the blocking shield. This shield looks like a pad that is up right and attached to a small metal structure. Usually someone is standing on the metal structure to give it weight and resistance. The linemen than have to push this shield as quickly as they can backward with the person on top of it.
These football offensive line drills are meant to be tough and physically exhausting. If they weren’t the players wouldn’t be getting the adequate training that they need to become good players.
Increase Your Power with these Pro Offensive Line Drills

Is there one physical trait that leads to success more than any other for offensive linemen? Yes there is, and that one trait or ability is called power. Having power will enable you to stifle your man, block for the run and protect your quarterback. Even if you don’t consider yourself naturally very powerful, you can use offensive line drills to hone your body and increase your effectiveness.
There are many different offensive line drills that you can practice, but you should first understand what power actually is. Power is scientifically defined as the result of force times velocity. Your force is your strength with your body’s weight behind it. Your velocity is how fast you can explode and complete the movement. Improving your explosive speed and your overall body strength will both improve your power.
You can start on this work in the weight room. Considering how linemen are graded on their bench press and their overall strength at the combine, there’s no reason to not include effective weightlifting in your offensive line drills. The types of exercises you do should be explosive, compound exercises that bring many different muscles and joints into play.
Exercises you should be performing to increase your power include the clean and press, the squat, the dead lift and the bench press. With all of these, you should focus on performing the exercise with a weight that you can do no more than 5 times. This will place a maximum amount of stress on your body and will make your muscles explosively respond and grow.
Outside of the weight room there are of course many offensive line drills to increase your power. One popular one is running with a weighted sled. Get on the field and attach a weighted sled around your hips using a belt and rope. Experiment with different weights to find out what you can handle and what works best.
Now explode out of your stance and sprint down the field. You can practice the 40 yard dash or you can run in smaller spurts with breaks in between. Having the extra weight restricting you will lead to increased explosiveness when you’re coming out of your break without the weights attached. Since velocity is one half of the power equation, this increased acceleration will provide increased power, and therefore, increased effectiveness.
Another offensive line drill you can try to increase power is the medicine ball toss. For this you’ll need a partner. Each of you should get in your 3 point stance about 5 yards apart from one another. One of you has a medicine ball at your feet. The one with the medicine ball explodes out of his stance as if the play just began and with two hands shovel passes the medicine ball as powerfully as possible to the other lineman. That lineman explodes out of his stance to catch the ball, and then passes it back. Do 10 tosses each before resting for a minute and repeating the entire drill.
There is an infinite amount of offensive line drills that you can use to increase your power. You can increase power by increasing strength or by increasing speed. Keep in mind the best drills incorporate movements or techniques that you will be actually using in game situations. Find the drills that work best for you and you’ll begin seeing increased success.
